VLC Media Player download ban lifted in India: users free to install software yet again


The company claims that there were about 25 million downloads in India every year before the ban. The government is yet to release an official statement on VLC ban in India. The company sent a legal notice to the government in October asking why the company’s service was banned in the country and to be allowed to defend its case through a virtual hearing.

If Videolan does not provide proper justification for the ban, the company has threatened the government, stating that “it will be entitled and compelled to initiate legal proceedings against you for violation of our rights guaranteed by the Constitution of India. Violation of your obligations under international law and your own provisions”.

However, the company has now proved its innocence and seems to have restored its service as VLC media player is once again available for download on the official website. Earlier, anyone trying to access the VLC website received a 404 error.

Why is VLC media player banned in India?

According to reports, the VideoLAN app Banned Due to “suspicious behavior”. Some cybersecurity experts have speculated that the government may have banned downloading VLC from the official website, as China-based hacking firm Cicada has allegedly used VLC to distribute malware.

Meanwhile, in 2020, the government also banned PUBG Mobile along with many other Chinese apps including TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser and more for the same reason.
