To say 2022 is packed with high-end, do-it-all smartphone launches would be an understatement. In fact, this year, smartphone makers have paid special attention to the camera setups that power their phones. As a result, buyers are greeted with versatile pocket shooters that can take surprisingly detailed shots at a variety of scenes and focal lengths. And, as the year comes to a close, we’ve decided to pit four of the best camera phones launched in 2022 against each other in a blind camera comparison to see what our readers think of their camera performance. Questionable equipment Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Review), the iPhone 14 Pro Max (Review), the Pixel 7 Pro (Review), further OnePlus 10 Pro (Review) So, without a doubt, let’s get this show on the road. Below you’ll see comparison images shot using these four phones, but we won’t tell you which device captured them. You can vote for the photos you think are the best in different scenarios (there’s a voting widget after each shooting scenario) and after a few weeks, we’ll announce the winners and losers of the blind camera test. So, what are you waiting for? Read on and cast your vote!
Daylight HDR shot
The first, arguably the most common photography scenario, is where the user clicks a landscape with their phone’s primary camera. Surprisingly, all four images look great, but you should consider the colors in the frame as well as the dynamic range of the images before casting your vote.

Wide angle shot
Next up, pictures of wide angle sensors from our competitors. Once again, all four devices managed to capture an amazing snap, but you have to pay attention to the corner details in the photos. Also, look for highlight clipping or overexposed bits in shots. We want you to keep an eye out for chromatic aberration, or color fringing, where certain elements of the composition are tinged with pink/purple.

A telephoto (3-3.3x) shot
Fortunately, all four of the devices we’re comparing today ship with multiple telephoto cameras for snapping photos of far-away subjects. We’ve noticed that most buyers usually default to a 3x telephoto shot and, as a result, snag pictures at and around a predetermined zoom level. Here, you want to see which 3x shot provides the best sharpness and colors. Also, be on the lookout for textures in snaps – after all, you don’t want to vote for a grossly sharpened image!

A portrait shot
In an attempt to free two birds with one key, we also clicked portrait pictures with four phones. Here, you need to take a closer look at the bokeh created by the devices and see if the blur effect seeps into the bits that should be in focus. Also, be sure to check the subject’s skin tone as well as facial details in each snap.

close up
Needless to say, buyers choosing one of the four contenders will also want to click close-ups with the phone. So, we snagged a close-up image of a red flower with the primary sensor of all four phones. A red flower becomes a great thing, as most devices struggle to properly resolve red. Consequently, you should closely examine the petals of the flower in the four snaps and vote for the one that offers the best detail and least blemish.

Selfie
Many people rely more on the front camera of their smartphone than the rear camera array. If you’re a selfie lover too, be sure to vote for the best selfie after our contestant rates images from the front-facing cameras. Look for a photo with the best facial detail and good exposure metering. Furthermore, you should also consider the subject’s skin tone before casting your vote.

Lowlight with night mode shot
Finally, let’s look at lowlight images shot by phones. Note that the samples attached below utilize each device’s respective Night Mode utility. Understandably, the images look reasonably bright, however, you should also consider the noise in the images, as well as the overall clarity of the subjects in the frame, before casting your vote.
