Talking about the architecture of Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, the chip has a tri-cluster architecture. The configuration includes one prime core, four performance cores and three efficiency cores, all of which can be tuned to higher clock speeds. The Super Core features ARM’s new Cortex-X3 and runs at 3.2GHz. The other two clusters are clocked at 2.8GHz and 2.0GHz respectively.

The CPU is complemented by a 25 percent faster Adreno graphics processor. Thanks to the new Kryo architecture, the chipset has 40 percent more power compared to the previous generation, ensuring that gamers can play their favorite titles for a long time without worrying about charging their devices. And then there’s Snapdragon Elite Gaming, which supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing and the Unreal Engine 5 Metahumans framework.

Thanks to Qualcomm’s first cognitive ISP, next-generation smartphone flagships also offer impressive camera capabilities. With Snapdragon Sight, ISP enables semantic segmentation and can use an artificial intelligence neural network to distinguish faces, individually optimizing facial features such as hair, skin and clothes, resulting in accurate output. In addition to supporting high-res sensors, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the first chipset in the family to include the AV1 codec capable of playing 8K HDR videos at 60fps.

In the AI department, the chipset comes with the Qualcomm AI Engine which includes a new Hexagon processor. Referred to as Snapdragon Smart, this combination offers AI-supported camera functionality as well as fast natural language processing with multi-language translation. It is the first Qualcomm chip to support INT4, the AI precision format. The silicon also includes a Qualcomm AI Sensing Hub, which gets dual AI processors and offers support for custom trigger words for voice commands. The chipmaker is promising AI improvements across the board and will also use a special power delivery system for the Hexagon processor.

Rounding out the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 specs is Snapdragon Connect, which claims to have the world’s most advanced 5G platform. The Snapdragon X70 5G modem features a Qualcomm 5G AI processor and offers 5G dual-SIM dual-active support. With the Qualcomm FastConnect 7800, the chip also supports low-latency Wi-Fi 7 and dual Bluetooth connectivity. In addition to the next-gen Wi-Fi standard, it also features High Band Simultaneous Multi-Link, which enables maximum Wi-Fi 7 performance at speeds of up to 5.8Gbps.

Other features include Snapdragon Sound technology with Spatial Auto support and Snapdragon Secure to protect users’ data.

Qualcomm highlighted that smartphone brands like ASUS, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi and more are launching devices powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

There are many other features and we will do an in-depth piece on this soon, so keep watching this space. But which feature caught your attention the most? Let us know in the comments below.
