Here’s how Netflix’s ad-supported plan works

Netflix said in its blog post that, at launch, the ads will be 15 to 30 seconds long and will play before or during a show or movie. On an average, users get 4 to 5 minutes of ads per hour. Most of the Netflix catalog is ad-supported, but a limited number of TV shows and movies do not receive ads due to licensing restrictions.

The plan offers 720p video quality and users won’t be able to download anything if they go for the ‘Basic with Ads’ Netflix plan. For existing plans, nothing will change for Netflix users. The ad-based plan will go live next month and it is not known when it will be launched for Indian users. Currently, Netflix has three plans – Basic, Standard and Premium.

“Basic with Ads also represents an exciting opportunity for advertisers – the chance to reach diverse audiences, including younger viewers who don’t watch much linear TV, in a premium environment with a seamless, high-resolution advertising experience,” Netflix said. Its a blog post.

In its announcement, Netflix said the company came up with the ad-supported plan with the help of its partner Microsoft. “We believe that Netflix started at $6.99 a month, and now we have one price per fan. Although it’s still very early days, we’re thrilled with the interest from users and advertisers – and couldn’t be more excited about what’s to come.
