Jio 5G and Airtel 5G download speed, per Ookla
the city | Jio 5G speed | Airtel 5G Speed |
Delhi | 600Mbps | 197.98Mbps |
Mumbai | 514.38Mbps | 271.01Mbps |
Kolkata | 482.02Mbps | 33.83Mbps |
Varanasi | 485.22Mbps | 516.57Mbps |
These are the average download speeds of Airtel 5G and Jio 5G in respective cities as of June 2022. As can be seen, Jio 5G has better download speed compared to Airtel in every region except Varanasi.
“When we cross-reference operators’ 5G speeds and the frequency band they’re using, we see a cautionary tale,” Ookla said. The test was conducted using Speedtest Intelligence data, which revealed that Jio’s 5G performance varies depending on the spectrum band it uses.
Jio is doing better because it has recently bought more spectrum in the much-demanded C-band spectrum. Spectrum auction. It is also the only telco to own the 700MHz spectrum band. This gives Reliance Jio an upper edge over Airtel and Vi, which only bought C-band. 700MHz is a low-band spectrum that provides a higher cut than indoor signal penetration in both urban and rural areas.
So, when using Jio C-Band, the performance ranges between 606.53 Mbps and 875.26 Mbps average download speed. On the other hand, for a 5G network optimizing the comparatively lower 700 MHz frequency band, the result is between 78.69 Mbps and 95.13 Mbps median download speed. Results for Airtel ranged from 365.48 Mbps to 716.85 Mbps when using its C-band spectrum holding.
